GeoNames

The birth-place lookup in onboarding is powered by the GeoNames geographical database. It supplies each city’s name, region, country, coordinates, and IANA time zone, which is what lets your Schema be calculated from a real place rather than free text. This data has been modified. We use a subset of the cities extract, trim it to the fields we need, resolve the region and country codes to display names, and round the coordinates.

When a birth place is not in our bundled dataset, we fall back to the Open-Meteo geocoding API to resolve it. Open-Meteo’s location data is itself based on GeoNames and is credited here on the same terms.
